A method for controlling a turbocharged engine via an electronic controller and a plurality of electronically-actuated valves, comprising: responsive to a first condition where boost pressure is lower than a threshold, charging, via the electronic controller, a boost reservoir with combusted exhaust gas to a first pressure by opening a first valve; responsive to a second condition where boost pressure is higher than the threshold, raising the boost reservoir to a second, higher pressure by further charging, via the electronic controller, the boost reservoir with compressed intake gas by opening a second valve; and discharging, via the electronic controller, the pressurized gas from the boost reservoir to an engine manifold by opening a third valve.
