PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an array direction detecting method which can detect the array direction easily, in an article group in which articles with different array directions are mixed, and to provide a sorting method which can classify the article group depending on the above detecting result. SOLUTION: In an article group 4..., 4n formed by arraying articles 4 made by installing an accessory member 3 to one side end of a base body 2, different colors are given to the base body 2 and the accessory member 3 respectively, and by the color detected by a color sensor 6 when the articles 4 are scanned from a specific direction, the respective array directions of the articles in the article group 4..., 4n are detected. And depending on the detected color difference, the articles with different array directions are processed to classify in a sorting process (f).
