PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the reliability of examination and verification results, with respect to examination and verification of a scan-type write used in a copying machine, a printer product, or the like. SOLUTION: When the light quantity distribution of an optical system using a scanning beam is detected and examined, a beam receiving means having a two-dimensional light-receiving face and an image forming means which forms the image of a beam on the beam reception means are prepared, the beam receiving means and the image-forming means are moved in the direction of the optical axis of the scanning optical system, and the scanning beam is flickered and lit, beam light quantity data inputted from the beam reception means is processed, the beam diameter is obtained from this beam light quantity data, and the turn-on time of the beam is changed linearly to derive the linearity of change of the obtained beam diameter.
