PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restore the position-management information of data in a hard disk drive when the position-management information concerned is broken due to an accidental power source shutdown or the like. SOLUTION: A storage system makes a nonvolatile semiconductor memory 13 store, in an area format, the position-management information of a FAT area 110 in a hard disk drive 11, over the multiple generations, separately of the hard disk drive 11. When the position-management information of the FAT area 110 in the hard disk drive 11 is broken, the storage system compares the position-management information of area format, which is stored in the nonvolatile semiconductor memory 13 over the generations, and restores the position-management information of the data of the FAT area 110 in the hard disk drive 11.
