A protection switching method and an apparatus thereof in a ring type network for maintaining a service are provided to maintain a service by quickly switching the protection switching method through a protection link. An interception cancellation unit(100) releases an intercepted port blocked according to a failure sensing frame received from a network device. A connecting unit(110) transmits and releases a switching frame through the protection link released port. A switching table update unit(112) updates a packet transmission port designating table. A switching packet transmission unit(114) switches packet transmission based on the updated table.
