PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring device for a handrail driving device of a passenger conveyor capable of sensing at early stage the chipping generated in a pressure roller to press a handrail to a drive roller to drive the handrail frictionally. SOLUTION: A handrail 10 is driven frictionally in such a condition as pinched by a drive roller 21 and pressure roller 25, and the contacting surface of the handrail 10 with the pressure roller 25 or drive roller 21 will vary, and the displacement of the pressure roller owing to the change of the contacting surface is sensed by a displacement sensor SN, and if the obtained amount of displacement exceeds the specified level, notification devices 47 and 48 are actuated.
