A system for estimating the temperature of engine exhaust gas is provided to precisely estimate the temperature of engine exhaust gas by taking influence of the normal temperature of an exhaust pipe into consideration. A basic exhaust gas temperature in a normal state is calculated based on an air charge rate of intake air fed into an engine and an engine RPM. The basic exhaust gas temperature is corrected based on a state variation of an engine thereby obtaining a modified normal exhaust gas temperature. Then, a front basic exhaust gas temperature and a front exhaust pipe temperature of a catalyst converter are calculated based on the modified normal exhaust gas temperature by taking a time delay into consideration. After that, the front basic exhaust gas temperature and the front exhaust pipe temperature of the catalyst converter are multiplied by weights.
