PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel escalator eliminating the need for an emergency guide system which has been formerly required while avoiding defects of a conventional technology. SOLUTION: The escalator (1) has a structure of circulating continuous steps (3). Each step (3) has a step surface (3.1), a front surface, namely, a step kick plate (3.3), and both side faces guided to the sides. In a region of each side face, rollers (7, 8) are provided protruding to at least one transport side portion. They are guided along a roller track (5) of the escalator (1) which is laterally mounted for oblique travel. When an eccentric load in a region of the step foot plate (3.1) is applied to the step (3), at least one emergency guide hook (13) is fixed to the front surface, namely, each step (3) in a region of the step kick plate (3.3) so that the emergency guide hook (13) for the upside first step (3) at a higher position supports itself in a side face region (14) of a second step at the next lower position.
