PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system-equipped internal combustion engine allowing suppression of reduction of an actual compression ratio in time of one valve variable control. SOLUTION: In time of the one valve variable control wherein a valve opening characteristic of a changeover target valve is fixed and wherein a valve opening characteristic of another intake valve is continuously varied, valve closing timing of the changeover target valve is normally set to a lag angle side as compared with a bottom dead center BDC as shown by a broken line L1. In this internal combustion engine, the valve closing timing of the changeover target valve in time of the one valve variable control is set near the bottom dead center as shown by continuous lines L2, L3 so as to improve the actual compression ratio. A lift amount of the changeover target valve in time of the one valve variable control is set to be equal to a maximum lift amount in time of both-valve variable control shown by a dashed line L4 as shown by a continuous line L5 so as to suppress pumping loss.
