PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens having a wide-viewing angle, while being able to obtain high imaging performance. SOLUTION: The zoom lens ZL is provided which has a plurality of lens groups G1 to G4, disposed in this order starting from the object side along an optical axis, wherein among the plurality of lens groups G1 to G4, the first lens group G1 disposed closest to the object side has positive refractive power and comprises an optical path bending element P for bending the optical path and a plurality of lens components L11 and L12 disposed closer to the object side than to the optical path bending element P. The conditional inequality L1/Lp<1.0, where L1 is the axial distance between the surface (1) closest to the object in the first lens group G1 and the surface (5) closest to the object in the optical bending element P, and Lp is the axial distance of the optical bending element P, is satisfied.
