PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that liquid crystal is disordered in alignment or becomes turbid in white along linear electrodes, in an optical deflecting device used for an image display device, when potentials which are different in steps are applied to a plurality of linear electrodes to apply a horizontal electric field into the liquid crystal, and when an optical deflecting device is driven by applying a voltage, the white turbidity often extends linearly and is apt to be generated at an edge portion of a linear electrode, because of a level difference between where the linear electrode is formed and where the linear electrode is not formed as one of the causes. SOLUTION: On a substrate, the linear electrodes are disposed side by side and coupled nearby ends of the respective electrodes by a resistance film, and a prescribed potential is applied across the resistance film. A conductive intermediate layer is provided on a linear electrode, and an alignment control layer is provided further thereupon. The resistance value Ri, resulting from the conductive intermediate layer between adjacent linear electrodes, is set to be 10 times or larger than the resistance value Rr of the resistance film connecting the electrodes. Consequently, the potential gradient in the liquid crystal becomes gentle, and the problem of the white turbidity is solved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
