PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator safety device for preventing a passenger from being shut up in a car by determining whether a trouble in the device is due to a trick by a passenger or an earthquake in the case wherein speed of the car is increased by a trick by a passenger or an earthquake in an elevator. SOLUTION: In the case wherein a car exceeds a predetermined speed and stops due to a trick by a passenger or an earthquake, a determination whether excessive speed is due to a trick by a passenger or an earthquake or a trouble in the device is made by determining whether vibration components computed based on a vibration model of a car rope system is contained in the car speed or not, and in the case of an excessive speed not caused by a trouble in the device, the car is returned to the nearest floor.
