PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide alkali-free glass which satisfies the requirements for a glass substrate for a liquid crystal display, is free of As<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and Sb<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and is excellent in solarization resistance. SOLUTION: The alkali-free glass is substantially free of alkali metal oxides (R<SB>2</SB>O), As<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and Sb<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and comprises, by mass, 50-70% SiO<SB>2</SB>, 10-20% Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 9-15% B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 0-2.5% MgO, 6.5-15% CaO, 3-10% SrO, 0-3% BaO, 10-18% MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO and 0.05-1% SnO<SB>2</SB>as a basic composition. In the alkali-free glass, the difference between optical transmittance at the wavelength of 400 nm (wall thickness 0.7 mm) measured before and after ultraviolet exposure is 0-2%, the temperature corresponding to 10<SP>2.5</SP>poise is <1,560°C, and the density is <2.50 g/cm<SP>3</SP>.
