PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which avoids the occurrence of nonuniform image due to residue of a dispersant dissolved in a carrier liquid contained in a liquid developer on a photoreceptor. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a rotatable developing roller (35Y) which transports a liquid developer containing a toner for developing an electrostatic latent image on a latent image bearing member, a carrier liquid and a dispersant soluble in the carrier liquid; a rotatable intermediate transfer medium to which a developer image on the latent image bearing member is primarily transferred; an application means to apply a liquid in which the dispersant is soluble on a downstream side of the developing roller in the rotation direction of the latent image bearing member and on an upstream side of a primary transfer device for transfer to the intermediate transfer medium; a latent image bearing member cleaning device; and an intermediate transfer medium cleaning device.
