A method and apparatus for transmitting power control information in a wireless communication system are described. An InBandPowerControl block message comprising a 1 bit ContinuationBit field, wherein the ContinuationBit field is set to "0" to indicate if the message being transmitted is the last RLInbandControl block in a MAC header, a 1 bit BlockFormat field, wherein the BlockFormat field is set to "0" to indicate a RL power control block, a 3 bit MaxSubCarriers field, wherein the MaxSubCarriers field indicates the maximum number of subcarriers that an access terminal can transmit at reverse data channel (RDCH)Gain based on transmit power constraints and a 3 bit reverse data channel GainIndex field, wherein the RDCHGainIndex field is set to a value having a length of 3 bits between "0" and "7" as a linear interpolation between RDCHGainMin and RDCHGainMax is generated and transmitted over a communication link.
