Novel thermal insulating material (I) of porous aluminate, showing temperature resistance up to more than 1000 [deg] C, consists of alkali metal beta -aluminate (and/or its autoclaved precursor) and is resistant to alkaline vapors and melts. Independent claims are included for: (1) shaped articles of (I), in the form of a plate, composite brick, tube, tube segment or ring; and (2) the production of (I) (optionally in the form of the shaped articles), by: (a) forming a homogeneous aqueous mixture of alkali metal releasing first material(s) (II) and aluminum ion releasing second material (s) (III), both of which form the corresponding oxides with volatilization of the remaining components at less than 1000[deg]C, the calculated molar ratio of alkali metal oxide to aluminum oxide being approximately twice that in alkali metal beta -aluminate; (b) autoclaving the obtained homogeneous suspension, in a mold or in the form of a pressed plate or shaped article, at ca. 200[deg]C for 5-30 hours; (c) predrying at 160[deg]C for 5-30 hours; (d) optionally demolding and post-drying at ca. 160[deg]C; and (e) optionally firing in a calcination furnace for 5-15 hours or in situ at 8000-1600[deg]C.
|
