PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a function of air vent to a relief valve, and to achieve simplification, the reduction of weight and the reduction of the size of a chain tensioner. SOLUTION: A plunger 13 is installed into a cylinder chamber 12 in a housing 11, a valve mounting hole 30 making a pressure chamber 22 communicate with the outside is provided on the outer peripheral upper part of the housing 11, the relief valve 31 is installed therein, and a fastening screw 36 is fitted to a female screw 30a on the inner periphery of the valve mounting hole 30, and the relief valve 31 is fixed. A passage 38 is formed on the outer periphery of a valve sleeve 32 so as to make a screw space formed of a screw fitting part of the female screw 30a and the fastening screw 36 communicate with the pressure chamber 22. A spring washer 39 is installed between the fastening screw 36 and the housing 11. The pressure chamber 22 and the outside are made to communicate with each other through a separation part 39a of the spring washer 39 and the screw space of the screw fitting part and the passage 38, and air in the pressure chamber 22 is delivered.
