In certain aspects, the present invention provides compositions and methods for treating fatty liver disease by administering an antagonist of an ActRIIB signaling pathway. Examples of such antagonists include ActRIIB polypeptides, anti-ActRIIB antibodies, anti-myostatin antibodies, anti-GDF3 antibodies and anti-activin A or B antibodies. A variety of hepatic and metabolic disorders may be improved by treating fatty liver disease.

1. A method for treating fatty liver disease in a patient in need thereof, the method comprising administering an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of:
a. a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to the sequence of amino acids 29-109 of SEQ ID NO:2; and b. a polypeptide encoded by a nucleic acid that hybridizes under stringent hybridization conditions to the nucleic acid of SEQ ID NO: 3.
