PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spindle device having a pre-load switching mechanism of a bearing capable of more completely attaining both of spindle rigidity and high speed rotation, high speed operation, and size reduction. SOLUTION: The spindle device S has a rotating shaft 1 for clamping a tool T on one edge, a front side bearing 2 for supporting the tool side of the rotating shaft 1, a rear side bearing 3 for supporting the side opposite to the tool side of the rotating shaft 1, a housing 4 for fixing an outer wheel 2a of the front side bearing 2, a rotor 5 disposed between the front side bearing 2 and the rear side bearing 3 and rotating integrally with the rotating shaft 1, a stator 6 disposed around the rotor 5 and generating the rotational force to the rotor 5, a pre-load supporting mechanism 60 for working constant axial load between the outer wheel 2a of the front bearing 2 and the outer wheel 3a of the rear bearing 3 and generating the pre-load to the front bearing 2 and the rear bearing 3, a pre-load switching bearing 9 disposed between the front bearing 2 and the rotor 5, and pre-load switching mechanisms 63, 64 for switching the pre-load method for the pre-load switching bearing 9.
