PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a fall in detection precision due to aged deterioration of a sensor without consuming coloring agent. SOLUTION: Position of a carriage when a PW detector traverses both ends of a reference table and the output voltage changes is detected (S130, S170) by a linear encoder as actual measurement positions, actual measurement widths (A1-A0) are calculated (S190) from the actual measurement positions (A0, A1), and the PW detector is corrected (S200, S210) from the actual measurement widths and a reference width. Deterioration with time of the PW detector can thereby be corrected on the user side without consuming ink and fall of detection precision can be prevented. When printing is performed while specifying the margin of a sheet S strictly, the user can attain results as specified. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
