The purpose of the present invention is to improve the accuracy of photon counting. The imaging element is provided with a pixel and a determination unit. The pixel is provided with a transfer transistor constituted by an embedded channel-type MOS transistor, and outputs a pixel signal on the basis of the charge transferred by the transfer transistor in an ON-state from a photodiode to a floating diffusion. The determination unit converts the outputted pixel signal to a digital value, compares the converted digital value to a threshold value, and makes a binary determination on whether or not photons are incident on the pixel that generated the pixel signal. |
