The present invention provides a electrostatic discharge protection device for protecting giant magnetoresistive devices in hard disk drive from being damaged by transient current generated as a result of electrostatic discharge. Embodiments of the invention include pair of surface mount diodes that are connected back-to-back and connected to the shunting pads of a head gimbal assembly in parallel to the giant magnetoresistive device protect the giant magnetoresistive device from transient current generated by the electrostatic discharge.
