The present invention provides a nonaqueous electrolyte solution which enables the achievement of an electric double layer capacitor having excellent durability. The present invention is a nonaqueous electrolyte solution for electric double layer capacitors, which is obtained by dissolving a quaternary ammonium salt in a nonaqueous solvent, said quaternary ammonium salt serving as an electrolyte. This nonaqueous electrolyte solution contains 0.1-30 ppm of alkali metal cations.
