The invention relates to a method for producing an insulating material, in which a plant-based starting material comprising natural cavities, especially natural pores, is treated with a hydrophobizing agent, then the treated starting material is dried and the dried hydrophobized starting material is bound with an aqueous binder, wherein the binder prior to the mixing with the hydrophobized dried starting material or else the mixed overall composition composed of binder and hydrophobized starting material is stirred/beaten to a foam by folding in a gaseous fluid and/or a foam is formed by adding a pore former, especially an additive that forms gas bubbles, to the binder prior to the mixing with the hydrophobized dried starting material or else to the mixed overall composition.
