METHODS FOR MODULATING THE PROLIFERATION OF HEMATOPOIETIC CELLS

Described are methods for proliferating or causing apoptosis of erythroid progenitor cells by contacting the cells with polypeptides having integrin VLA-5 or VLA-4 binding sites, respectively. Cellular populations cultured under such conditions may find use in the treatment of subjects having natural or induced hematopoietic deficiencies, in the study of erythroid cell development, and in other areas.
