<p>A ball bearing assembly (10) whereby the inner ring (16) is split into a loaded half (18) and a non-loaded half (19). The cage lan ds (48,50) on the inner ring halves (18,19) support the cage ring (30). An annular groove (34) having a non-rectangular cross-section is disposed at the inner ring bore and at the split face (22). A plurality of radial grooves (44) extend in the split face (22) of one inner ring half (18,19) to form radial passages between the annular groove (34) and the inner race (26) for directing oil under centrifugal forces collected in the annular groove (34), into the inner race (26). The bottom section of the annular g roove (34) acts as a reservoir (38) to feed all the radial passages (44) as well as provide a longer residence time for the oil on loaded inner ring surfaces. The annular reservoir (38) circumferentially equalizes the oil supply to the radial split face passages (44) and increases heat transfer to the oil since it is located in the loaded inner ring half (18) where substantial frictional heat generation occurs. As a result, a preferential cooling of the loaded half (18) of the inner ring (26) is provided. The invention can be broadly applied to cool and lubricate rotating parts in rotary machines, especially in high speed applications.</p> |
