PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transport device which inhibits change of a medium transport speed which results from change of back tension exerted on the medium, and to provide an image reading device.SOLUTION: A transport device 13 includes: a separation roller pair which is operated by power transmitted from a first motor 31 thereto; a register roller pair 23 which is operated by power transmitted from a second motor 32 thereto; an assist roller pair 22 disposed between the separation roller pair and the register roller pair 23 in a script transfer direction; a first transmission mechanism part 40 which transmits the power from the first motor 31 to the assist roller pair 22; a second transmission mechanism part 50 which transmits the power from the second motor 32 to the assist roller pair 22; and a control part which controls an operation mode of each roller pair.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
