A field device commissioning system comprising a commissioning tool configured to communicate with a repository and an input-output (IO) device, the IO device being configured to communicate with a field device, the commissioning tool comprising a first processor configured to: a. retrieve, from the repository, engineering data for the IO device or the field device; b. retrieve, from the IO device, a first configuration parameter value for the IO device or the field device; c. determine, from the retrieved engineering data, a second configuration parameter value for the IO device or the field device, the second configuration parameter corresponding to the first configuration parameter; d. determine if the first configuration parameter value is the same as the second configuration parameter value; and e. generate alert on a user interface when the first configuration parameter value is not the same as the second configuration parameter value, wherein the IO device comprises a second processor.
