When the intake pipe absolute pressure can be set to the target level by changing the charge pressure, a level of the charge pressure, by means of which the target level of the intake pipe absolute pressure can be provided in the intake pipe (3) after the opening of a volumetric flow control valve (30) of the internal combustion engine, is determined and the determined level of the charge pressure is produced in a charge air segment (2) of the internal combustion engine. In order to provide the target level of the intake pipe absolute pressure in the intake pipe (3), the volumetric flow control valve (30) is opened and the actuator (12) is switched over between the operating states.
