A method of inducing an immune response to Clostridium difficile in a subject, the method comprising administering to the subject a composition comprising a toxin or a toxoid of C. difficile and one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients, wherein the one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients increases thermal stability of the toxin or toxoid and/or reduces or delays aggregation of the toxin or toxoid, relative to a composition lacking the one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients.
