PURPOSE: A pointing device equipped with a fingerprint recognition function on a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to simplify operation and offer the small pointing device by performing user certification and controlling a pointer with a fingerprint image through one fingerprint recognition sensor. CONSTITUTION: A fingerprint obtaining part(34) obtains the fingerprint image from a surface of a finger(30) controlling the pointer for the first setting period. A fingerprint certification part(100) determines the user certification of the obtained fingerprint image by comparing minutiae of the obtained fingerprint image with the minutiae of the previously registered fingerprint image for the second setting period. A pointing controller(200) detects movement information of the fingerprint image by extracting the fingerprint image of an 'mXn' pixel size from the obtained fingerprint image for the third setting period, and calculates/outputs a moving direction/distance of the pointer by using displacement data of the fingerprint image calculated based on the movement information. |
