PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high thixotropic property-affording agent comprising chain clay mineral particles and having a high thixotropy index. SOLUTION: This thixotropic property-affording agent comprises the chain clay mineral particles, wherein the agent has a thixotropy index (TI) of≥4.0, when measured in a dispersion which is formed by using diethylhexyl phthalate (DOP) as a dispersion medium and has a chain clay mineral particle concentration of 7 wt%, a thixotropy index of≥3.0, when measured in a dispersion which is formed by using water as a dispersion medium and has a chain clay mineral particle concentration of 3 wt%, a bulk specific gravity of≤0.125 g/mL, and such a particle size distribution that secondary particles having a particle size of more than 1.0μm and not more than 30μm are contained in an amount of≥70 wt% and secondary particles having a particle size of not more than 1.0μm are contained in an amount of 5-30 wt%, when measured by a laser method.
