PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auto tensioner preventing air in a reservoir chamber from entering into the pressure chamber and preventing the hydraulic oil out flowing from the pressure chamber while passing through the leak clearance from becoming a mist. SOLUTION: This automatic tensioner is provided so that the hydraulic fluid is stored in a bottomed cylinder 9, a sleeve 11 is coaxially arranged with the cylinder 9 in the cylinder 9, a rod 13 is inserted into the sleeve 11, the inside of the cylinder 9 is partitioned into the pressure chamber 14 and the reservoir chamber 15 by the rod 13 and the sleeve 11, the leak clearance 25 connecting the pressure chamber 14 with the reservoir chamber 15 is formed between sliding surfaces of the rod 13 and the sleeve 11, a return spring 18 is arranged for energizing the rod 13, and a check valve 31 allowing only a flow of the hydraulic fluid to the pressure chamber side from the reservoir chamber side, is arranged in a passage 28 connecting the pressure chamber 14 with the reservoir chamber 15. An oil reservoir 27 storing the hydraulic fluid washing out by passing through the leak clearance 25 from the pressure chamber 14, is formed between the outer periphery of the rod 13 and the inner periphery of the sleeve 11.
