<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a color filter which does not impair the flatness of a layer of, for example, a transparent electrode layer or alignment layer or the like, formed on a colored layer even if a protective layer is not formed on the colored layer and substantially prevents the occurrence of film peeling due to a rubbing process or the alignment layer and exhibits excellent display characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The adjacent two or more colored layers include tapered extension sections extending onto a black matrix surface and the adjacent extension sections are separated from each other via gaps.
