PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing device and an image processing method capable of excellently performing color reproduction of the color of input assumed color gamut as well as capable of ensuring color reproduction also to the other colors, even in case that the input assumed color gamut changes with types of input data, at the time of conversion from the color gamut of an input device into the color gamut of an output device through color space independent of devices. SOLUTION: According to a kind of input data, an input assumed color gamut 4102a, 4102b or 4102c is defined. Further, it is judged whether a lattice point X which is an object of color gamut conversion is within the input assumed color or not. When the point X is judged as being within the input assumed color, it is compressed into a point X' of distance OX' in a prioritized color gamut 4104. On the other hand, when the point X is judged as being outside the input assumed color, it is compressed into the point X' between a boundary Pf of the prioritized color gamut 4104 and an outermost shell D of a printer color gamut 1203. Consequently, irrespective of a kind of input data, good compression which does not produce crushing of a color etc. can be performed by taking comparatively large prioritized color gamut for the color in the input assumed color gamut 1202.
