The carbon pantograph shoe (1) runs on a catenary wire (6), and has a wear strip (2) under the shoe which is mounted on a stirrup (4) fixed to a pantograph. The wear strip is made of graphite and has a sealed longitudinal enclosure containing a fluid. The pressure of the fluid is monitored. Damage or excessive wear causes rupture of the strip and allows the fluid to escape, and the fall in pressure is detected, triggering lowering of the pantograph so no further damage occurs. The longitudinal enclosure is made of a material that is thermally stable up to 400 degrees C, with hardness less than 4 on the Mohs scale, and electrical conductivity greater than that of graphite |
