A method for producing methane and other organic compounds is disclosed comprising adding hydrogen to an anaerobic digester to cause microbes to combine the hydrogen with dissolved carbon dioxide or carbonates to make methane and other organic compounds, and converting the carbon therein into hydrocarbon fuels, biofuels and chemical feedstock for industrial processes without the need for a feedstock or biological origin. Hydrogen may be produced from sources such as the electrolysis of water, and microbes may be methanogenic bacteria. The method results in a biogas with a much lower concentration of carbon dioxide than conventional biogas. The carbon dioxide may enter solution by exposing an alkaline solution to a mixture of gases containing carbon dioxide. Alternatively, the carbon dioxide may derive from sea water, either by running sea water through the anaerobic digester, or by concentrating carbon dioxide from sea water.
|
