A circuit protection device (100) includes a metal oxide varistor (MOV) (35), a spring terminal (36) and a thermal disconnect (30d) coupling the spring terminal (36) to the MOV (35). A gas discharge tube (GDT) (50) is coupled to the MOV (35). The spring terminal (36) is biased such that upon occurrence of an over voltage condition, heat generated by the MOV (35) melts the thermal disconnect (30d) and allows the spring terminal (36) to be displaced away from the MOV (35), thereby creating an opening circuit.
