PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing device achieving high-speed rewriting of an index file (IF) even when rewriting is required in the index file, by dividing index information into a part in which data length is fixed and a part in which data length is variable and information can be reproduced, relating to a recording device in which the index file storing the index information of the file by dividing it into a fixed data length part and a variable data length part is generated and recorded onto a recording medium, a recording method , a recording medium, and an electronic camera. SOLUTION: The recording device is provided with a generating means generating the IF including a plurality of area to which unique identifiers are assigned, and a recording means recording IF onto the recording medium, wherein in the generating means, attribute information of the file are divided into first attribute information of fixed data length and second attribute information of variable data length, they are stored in a plurality of area individually while relating the plurality of first attribute information for each of a plurality of files to the plurality of files individually, and while relating the plurality of second attribute information for each of the plurality of first attribute information to the plurality of first attribute information individually, the area of fixed data length are arranged as a first area group in a plurality of area, the area of variable data length are arranged as a second area group, and they are stored in IF.
