PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a temperature control device and method for an exhaust purifying catalyst, sufficiently raising the temperature of exhaust gas until the exhaust purifying catalyst is activated, without causing knocking while continuing compression ignition operation. SOLUTION: The device is provided for controlling the temperature of the exhaust purifying catalyst 40 which purifies exhaust gas from an engine 10 capable of compression ignition operation. It includes a catalyst temperature determining means S5 for determining whether the temperature of the exhaust purifying catalyst 40 falls below a reference temperature or not, and a catalyst temperature raising means S7 for raising the temperature of exhaust gas to raise the temperature of the exhaust purifying catalyst 40 by reducing thermal efficiency or lowering a cylinder gas temperature when it falls below the reference temperature.
