An internal combustion engine (ICE) 6 having at least one exhaust powered supercharger, the supercharger comprising at least one adiabatic compression-expansion engine (CE) 4 in the intake stream, at least one adiabatic compression-expansion engine (CE) 2 in the exhaust stream, and first and second variable speed motor-generators (MGs) 1, 5. The CEs 2, 4 and first MG 1 share a common shaft 3, and first and second MGs 1, 5 are electrically connected. Expansion of exhaust gas causes the exhaust CE 2 to rotate the shaft 3, which causes the intake CE 4 to compress, i.e. supercharge, the intake air. MG 1 acts as a generator when the ICE is being throttled, by generating electricity which is stored in a battery (not shown). When acceleration is demanded, the speed of MG 1 is reduced which causes MG 2 to output power to the ICE. When heavy acceleration is demanded, the nominal speed of MG2 is reduced to less than that of the ICE which causes MG 2 to output power, via MG 1, to accelerate the turbocharger shaft therefore increasing supercharging. The CEs 2, 4 may be cylinders (2, 4, figure 1) or Wankel rotary engines. |
