PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute position detector, equipped with an abnormality detection function for absolute position detection, and capable of responding at a high speed and in a short time. SOLUTION: A detection data effective processing part 103 transmits detection data from effective continuous detection elements to a code comparison part 104 as code data CSG. An absolute position code deriving part 101 inputs a command signal SRB from an effective bit command part 110, derives code data KSG corresponding to a code supposed to be detected by an effective detection element, following the signal SRB for designating an effective bit, based on absolute position dataθoutputted from a detection data processing part 103, and outputs it to the code comparison part 104. The code comparison part 104 compares the code data CSG with the code data KSG and transmits information on agreement and disagreement to an abnormality determination part 105. When information on agreement and disagreement satisfies some fixed conditions, the abnormality determination part 105 outputs a signal ERR showing that an abnormality has occurred in absolute position detection.
