PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically switch a B3 arithmetic range. SOLUTION: The automatic switching system for the B3 arithmetic range, in a transmitter receiving a frame signal multiplexed with a virtual container, is provided with B3 arithmetic means 8, 9, 10, 11 that calculate a B3 byte of a path overhead of the virtual container and compare the arithmetic value with a value inserted to a B3 byte of a succeeding frame, an AU pointer SS bit detection means 6, that detects an SS bit included in an AU pointer pointing out a head position of the virtual container and denoting an operating environment standard, and an operating environment standard discrimination means 7, that identifies the operating environment standard by the detection SS bit from the AU pointer SS bit detection means and discriminates as to whether the B3 arithmetic means conducts an arithmetic operation in a range including a fixed staff or the B3 arithmetic means conducts an arithmetic operation with a range which does not include the fixed staff.
