PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an automatic document feeder easy to use by enabling a document to be read when a document is left unremoved not incurring paper clogging, and further, to improve accuracy of floating detection. SOLUTION: At a position corresponding to a document reading plane 2ba and on a lower surface of an automatic document feeder body 11, a document guide member 20 is provided which is opposed to the document reading plane 2b and is movable in a direction coming close to and away from the document reading plane while the automatic document feeder body 11 takes a reading attitude due to closing operation, and which can be abutted on the reading plane 2b while the automatic document feeder body 11 takes a reading attitude. A detection means 27 is also provided for detecting floating of the automatic document feeder body 11 with respect to the document reading plane 2b based on a relative position of the document guide member 20 with respect to the automatic document feeder body 11, in the direction coming close to away from the document reading plane.
