PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an actuator for a hard disk drive which is composed of a silicon-containing aluminum based alloy, and is improved in a cleanliness on the surface and without any burrs, fine flaws, ruggedness or the like caused by a forming process on its surface, without any falling of second phase grains containing the oxide of silicon, and to provide a surface treatment method for obtaining the actuator arm. SOLUTION: In the surface treatment method for an actuator arm, the surface of an actuator arm for a hard disk drive composed of a silicon-containing aluminum based alloy is subjected to chemical polishing treatment with a phosphoric acid and nitric acid-containing mixed aqueous solution whose temperature is controlled to 80 to 110°C, and is thereafter subjected to dipping treatment for 5 to 300 s in an acidic aqueous solution comprising fluoride ions.
