<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous cutting of a surplus end prior to an input operation for needle threading motion by retaining a sewing thread uncut until the input operation for needle threading is conducted by a retaining section. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A needle threader 10 of a sewing machine which threads several needles 1-5 is provided with a needle threading hook 20 that inserts a sewing thread into an eye of a sewing needle, a thread retaining member 50 that retains the sewing thread on the opposite side of the needle threading hook across the sewing needle, a positioning mechanism 400 that determines the positions of the needle threading hook and the thread retaining member according to each sewing needle, a threading motion inputting mechanism 300 that gives the threading motion to the needle threading hook by operating an operation inputting member 310, a thread end retaining section 700 that retains the surplus end side of the sewing thread, and a thread cutting section 750 that cuts the surplus end of the sewing thread.
