Technology is disclosed for deferring storage operations (e.g., writes or reads) during hostile events. When a data storage device experiences a hostile event, e.g., a vibration, shock, etc. contact by a head of the data storage device with a disk surface can cause errors or indeed damage. The technology can cause a data storage device to suspend storage operations until the hostile event is no longer detected. |

1. A method comprising:
detecting, at a data storage system comprising a first and a second data storage devices, a command to perform a write operation to at least one of the first and second data storage devices; initiating the write operation; detecting, while the write operation is pending, a signal indicating that a hostile event is detected; in response to detecting the signal, determining that the hostile event affects the first data storage device but not the second data storage device; in response to determining that the write operation is to the first data storage device,
suspending the write operation during detection of the signal; andcontinuing the write operation to the first data storage device, after the signal is no longer detected; and in response to determining that the write operation is to the second data storage device, continuing the write operation during detection of the signal. |
