PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel plate, particularly a press plate having high strength and small distortion at the time of heating and cooling. SOLUTION: This stainless steel plate has a composition containing <=0.3% C+N, <=0.9% Si, <=2.0% Mn, 13.0 to 21.0% Cr and 5.0 to 12.0% Ni, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and also satisfying the following inequality (1) and having Vickers hardness of >=400 Hv and has a structure composed of a martensitic phase of <=30% and an austenitic phase of >=70% worked and inversely transformed from the martensitic: 80>=500-480(C+N)-11Si-9 N-15Cr-20Ni>=0...(1). In the production method, the steel is subjected to hot rolling, annealing and pickling, is thereafter cold-rolled so as to form a structure in which the volume ratio of a strain induced martensitic phase is controlled to >=35%, and the balance austenite, thereafter, the rolled stock is held between surface tables having smooth surfaces and is heat-treated in the temperature range of 450 to 650 deg.C with the pressure having a specific pressure of 0.49 to 1.96 N/cm2 applied.
