PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a carbon substrate for a gas diffusion layer; a gas diffusion layer using the carbon substrate; an electrode for a fuel cell including the gas diffusion layer; a membrane-electrode assembly; and a fuel cell.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to: a substrate for a gas diffusion layer, having a porosity gradient in a thickness direction thereof; a gas diffusion layer using the substrate; an electrode for a fuel cell including the gas diffusion layer; a membrane-electrode assembly; and a fuel cell. The gas diffusion layer is excellent in both water discharge ability and bending strength in a longitudinal direction and a lateral direction thereof.
