Some embodiments display the composite representation when a certain zoom level is reached for a map including the multiple POI icons. In some embodiments, the navigation application can determine POIs that may be of interest to the user based on the user's attributes and activity history and generate the composite representation based on those attributes. The composite representation can include multiple POI icons that are displayed adjacent to each other such that a user of the navigation application can readily identify POIs that are likely to be of interest to the user within a region.

A method comprising: identifying, at a server system, a plurality of graphical interface items, each of the plurality of graphical interface items corresponding to a point of interest (POI) on a map, wherein the map is associated with an initial map scale; receiving an indication of a change in the map scale to a new map scale; determining that the plurality of graphical interface items are overlapping when the map is in the new map scale; generating a composite representation that represents a plurality of POIs in response to determining that the plurality of graphical interface items are overlapping, wherein the composite representation is generated based at least in part upon one or more importance values associated with one or more of the plurality of POIs; and causing the generated composite representation to be displayed on a display of a computing device.
